Scientific Writing and Career Objectives (3 ECTS)

Content
  1. Writing, communication and publication in science: types and structure of scientific texts; scientific language; organization and interpretation of scientific articles; science divulgation; research and organization of bibliography; submission process and peer-review process of publications; scientific ethics in writing.
  2. Career management and objectives: preparation of curricula, motivation letters and interviews; strategies for problem solving in teams; team negotiation and decision making; time management.
  3. Presentation and discussion of individual scientific/professional interests by students regarding their future career.
Aims

This course aims at the development of transversal and transferable competences of students with regard to techniques of scientific writing, communication and publishing (and associated ethical issues), as well as strategies and techniques for professional career management and development.

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • know, understand and apply effective processes of scientific writing and publication;
  • develop skills of rigor, objectivity, critical thinking, creativity and scientific ethics;
  • understand, develop and adapt appropriate strategies for the effective pursuit of career objectives in the professional world (academic, industrial and business);
  • develop and apply efficient processes of oral scientific communciation.

Grading System

The program of this course will be implemented through classes and activities of different formats: theoretical exposition; individual and collective practical exercises; analysis of case-studies; database query tutorial modules of database searches; debates; oral presentations and their discussion.

The assessment is of distributed type, without final exam.

The final grade is calculated as follows: practical writing exercises and scientific communication (60%); practical exercises of career management/objectives (40%).
