Content

The syllabus of this course focus on:

  • Revision of fundamental concepts of electrochemistry
  • Electrochemical potential
  • Electrochemical cells in equilibrium
  • Debye-Hückel theory
  • Conductivity of electrolyte solutions
  • The electrical double layer
  • Electrical properties of the interface
  • Faradaic processes
    • Mass transfer controlled reactions
    • Reactions controlled by charge transfer
  • Potential step and sweep techniques
  • Introduction to electrochemical impedance spectroscopy

In the laboratory sessions, the students carry out experimental works illustrative of the themes developed in the lectures, whose results and main conclusions are presented in written reports and oral presentations.

Aims

To develop the students’ knowledge of interfacial electrochemistry. This includes both the understanding of fundamental aspects of electrochemistry, as well as techniques for characterization of electrochemical processes at electrode surfaces. To provide an advanced understanding on the behavior of an aqueous medium in the vicinity of an electrode surface.
