Master SERP+ Programme

Environmental (green) photochemistry

Aims

Solar radiation is the primary source of energy to the Earth. The photosynthetically active part of radiation supports primary production. The ultraviolet part of solar radiation can decompose and modify organic matter. If such biologically significant organic matter absorbs solar radiation, it may become photochemically modified and decomposed yielding e.g. CO2 and ammonium, which can be easily absorbed by living organisms. Solar-induced photolysis is also one of a major degradation pathways for many anthropogenic chemicals.
