Structural studies of macromolecules: biocrystallography and diffractometry


  • Principles of protein structure

  • Protein handling and crystallization
  • Modern diffraction techniques
  • Phasing methods in protein crystallography
  • Electron density maps and model building
  • Protein Data Bank (PDB) and validation of protein models


Familiarize the students with the principles of protein structure, properties of proteins and their crystals, the crystallographic method of macromolecular structure determination, and with the global resources of biostructural information.

Learning outcomes

The students will be able to:

  • find and use the information about the structure of biological macromolecules available in databanks
  • assess the quality of macromolecular models
  • use computer graphics for macromolecular structure analysis
  • understand the principles of protein crystallization and of macromolecular structure determination by X-ray diffraction
